Getting Glued to Your Own Reality Show - Dunning-Kruger effect in Reverse

May 22, 2018

Instead of over-estimating, I under-estimate.

And I bet you do too. A not-so-nice name for it is: beating your Self up.

Which is the opposite of the Dunning-Kruger effect, first documented by two psychologists at Cornwell University in 1999. They noticed that the less skill a person had, the more likely there were to overestimated that skill.

(e.g. no lack of dreadful acts optimistically auditioning for American Idol.)

I woke up this morning lamenting my lack of productivity.

However - a la Buddha and FM's combined insight - I knew better than to depend on my own illusionary view of reality. I know to ask my Self this question: "Is it true that I was unproductive yesterday?"

What you feel about your Self is - according to the Dunning-Kruger effect - most likely to be wrong. I decided I needed data. Was I productive? Was I lazy?

Let's find out.

It was time to harvest some data from my self-imposed productivity experiment. On December 30th, 2015 I decided to start writing a daily blog to my Self. After shower and meditation, I make it my first act of work.

In my blog, I write down what I intend to accomplish that day.

Next day, I post the previous day's objectives, adding a "YES" or "NO" to indicate if I accomplished them or not.

This morning, I first calculated how often I stuck to my grand plan. In the 880 days since I started running this experiment, I have posted 438 times. Which is basically once every second day. So far, so good. No basis for a beat-up here.

Next, I looked at the list I had made yesterday.

Saturday, May 27th, 2018:

20m - Precepts

60m - Run & shower

40m - MM

30m - Posture Daily

30m - ATSuccess Daily

60m - Fix Discovery Sales page

60m - Make Sales Page in Kajabi

30m - Pay bills in Oz (transfer monies)

30m - Call the girls

30m - Zero inbox

This was the plan for the day I felt/believed I had wasted.

Finally, I booted up my blog - which I secretly keep on Google's blogspot - posted the list again, and put a YES or NO next to each item to indicate if I accomplished it or not.

I was shocked. The result did not match my perception AT ALL!

Here's what I found:

20m - Precepts YES

60m - Run & shower YES

40m - MM YES

30m - Posture Daily YES

30m - ATSuccess Daily YES

60m - Fix Sales page YES

60m - Make Sales Page in Kajabi NO

30m - Pay bills in Oz (transfer monies) YES

30m - Call the girls YES

45m - Zero inbox YES

9 things I said I would do, I did.

Only one thing was left undone.

That's 9/10 which is 90% and there is absolutely no justification in my feeling-based belief that yesterday was a non-productive day.

And that's how I like to do things in ATSuccess.

Forget how you feel sweetie - what is the data telling you?

I don't mean to undermine instinct - I am a big fan of that - I do mean to undermine the "I am no good" and "I can't" mind that dominates every teacher who fails to accomplish what they set out to do. And the feel-good Dunning-Kruger mind which says you are accomplishing a lot, when you're basically just re-arranging chairs on the Titanic.

ATSuccess primarily involves 6 session coaching sessions a month designed to keep you glued to the reality show of your own life. And at the moment, it costs less than two lessons a month. Not bad if you start thinking of the outcome available to you…

When you want to start to get support for being accountable for your dreams, then take advantage of this month's absurd offer. For less than the cost of two AT lessons a month, you can jump onto the ATSuccess accomplishment train right now.

It's for people interested in the truth of their actions. But hurry, offer ending soon.
