Stop Lying to Your Customers (Part II)

Aug 23, 2019

One of the mentors I follow – the ego-inflated and brilliant Dan-Kennedy-look-alike Ben Settle - once sent out an email with a subject heading:

"Stop Lying to Your Customers"

Of course, I had to read it – and what he was saying was that it is important not to keep making excuses for the customer. Like: "I know your fat, but that's because of MacDonald's keeps supersizing your meal, the rats. Let's sue them."

If I were going to do that, I'd write some angry tirade about desperate companies that supply cheap furniture for their poor employees. I'd blame the Company's chairs for your bad Posture, and I'd blame their computers for ruining your eyesight. I'd make you feel good by telling you that it isn't your fault.

It would be a lie.

Chairs don't give people bad backs --> people give themselves bad backs.

Eyes get tired because of poor posture --> you are the one doing the looking.

When you're honest about that, you stop putting all your energy towards getting a better chair and start the process of ending your suffering.

This is how honesty in Posture works.

It's a theme I've been recently rabbiting on about around Posture. Alexander's discovery requires honesty to work – excuses, justification, and blaming others doesn't cut it. AND YET, here's the rub - your brain has evolved to be on a constant lookout for surrogates to justify and explain away its bad decisions.

OK, so how do you reconcile this paradox?

The solution of one group I attended for years was super neat. They declared:

"You are not responsible for who you are now; you are responsible for who you become."

Which is nice. It's comforting for a self-hater.

Even if I see my Self as a quivering wretched weasel in a god-awful mess – I can love that personality I inherited. This is my material to work on.

Alleluia.

When blame and shame are put to the side – finally you can see an unencumbered Self.

Posturally, this is about recognition – a key concept in physiology. For a biological system to change, it is only triggered when it recognizes a condition. Without that, the system won't change. Recognition is the first step. In Posture, you recognize what is happening by rigorous analysis. This kind of logical analysis is a core value in BodyChance. Our BodyThinking course is designed to give you the ability to get real about what you do.

BodyThinking is an online course I developed for my Trainees. It involves three modules of 5 lessons each; with each lesson containing many videos exploring how we use our bones, muscles and ranges.

When you’re ready to upskill your ability to recognize what is happening Posturally in your Self and others, ask me for the link to study that course.
