What is the Alexander Technique Again?
Mar 30, 2017A few weeks ago I was violently berated by one of my staff.
He didn't hit me or anything - I just rarely encounter real, live and angry people.
Then last night I was berated again for the same reason. By a different staff! At some point it's necessary to think - perhaps they have a point? If they have to shout to be heard, maybe I am not listening.
So what did I hear?
According to them, I am basically too growth focused, too market orientated. I don't see a bigger picture, or recognise the contribution of people outside my sphere of interest.
I STAND ACCUSTED.
(At least I wasn't compared to Trump this time)
Here is my defence…
It starts with two random comments from the personal stories being shared in one of our ATSuccess Facebook groups this week:
***
When someone suggested the Alexander Technique might help, I felt desperate enough to give it a go!
And another wrote:
One day I was in a library looking at the self-help books, as I was rummaging about one fell on the floor, it was about the Alexander Technique. I loaned the book, took it home and read it over the weekend. I didn't understand the content and couldn't see how this would help cure my bad back, as it gave little practical solutions!

oh dear - but isn't that soooooo how people react to our work?
1st encounter - No-one gets it.
2nd encounter - Still Puzzled.
3rd encounter - Weird (but good!)
4th encounter - you get the idea?
Try this quiz:
QUESTION: Who sells something that they're even sure what it is?
ANSWER: Alexander Technique teachers.
And again…
QUESTION: What profession can't figure out what kind of profession it is?
ANSWER: Alexander Profession (is that an oxymoron?)
Finally…
QUESTION: How do you sell something that no-one gets, not even the people selling it?
ANSWER: You don't.
Let's be honest.
Students who have been coming to us for more than a year still can't explain what they are buying to their partners, family or friends. How weird is that?
Even religions are more comprehensible than us.
It's an embarrassment.
Because people don't buy when they're confused.
And THAT - dear readers - is WHY I am obsessionally focused on growth and marketing. It is the measure of your communication success.
And it is why you should be obsessed too.
