26th September, 2014: Building A Star Biz

This is a special day for me, and I am not even sure why. However today I am sitting in the 1st class lounge of Qantas, on my way to attend an absurdly expensive seminar with Richard Koch on how to find, nurture and profit from a Star business. You don't enter a seminar like this unless you are already on a path… What is a Star business? 1.It is the undisputed leader of it's market niche 2.The niche is growing at more the 10% annually 3.The Star business is growing at 20% or more annually On all three accounts, BodyChance qualifies as a Star business. Why does this matter? It matters to anyone who is an Alexander Technique teacher because it holds a promise of a brighter future. A Star business is a transformational business - it usually involves creating a revolution in it's chosen field; heck - it even creates it's chosen field. This is important, because Alexander's work has struggled to create an identity in the world. Yet, one day, the promise is that going to your AT teacher will be as natural as checking Facebook (another Star business). How far away are we from being a household word? Not in my lifetime, that's for sure. BodyChance's mission is to set this in motion. BodyChance is living proof that Alexander Technique can be made into a powerful business model; that one day it has the potential to throw off cash like any other Star business. I am dreaming to see that day before I die. Maybe this seminar will teach me how. I want to see it not because of the money, but because of the recognition this will create in the eyes of onlookers: What is going on here!? What is this thing? Why is it so effective, so powerful? Those of us who know the work, understand this power. We have all experienced it, we have all at different times been awed and inspired by our exposure to it. Yet we are also confused and frustrated by the overwhelming lack of recognition the work has in the world today. Why do so few people see this?! In Richard's book, one of the Chapters starts with a quote from Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan:

Only puny secrets need protection. Big discoveries are protected by public incredulity.

It's our task to overcome that incredulity by delivering results that astound, amaze and transform. We can do it, because we already do it every day, in over 40 countries of the world. Never give up this dream and this promise. One day, it will be ours.
