7 Myths about Posture

Aug 25, 2019

Here they are, in their unadulterated simplicity:

1) Posture is a position
2) Perfect Posture exists
3) Good Posture requires a lot of work, like holding in my stomach all the time
4) Posture can't be altered. Once it's bad, there's nothing I can do about it.
5) Good Posture is unnatural and must be superimposed on the body
6) You are either born with good Posture, or you are not.
7) Expensive chairs and better desks are the secrets to good Posture.

1) Posture is a position
Nonsense. Posture is a verb. Nothing ever stays in one position. Not Ever.

2) Perfect Posture exists
People would like you to believe that. Then they can teach you their "perfect positions" which are simplistic formulas that insult your evolutionary heritage. What might seem to work for the short-term will be horrendous for you in the long-term.

3) Good Posture requires a lot of work, like holding in my stomach all the time.
This is a fundamental misconception of how we are designed. All our life-sustaining functions are automated – do you need to keep thinking about breathing all the time? You can influence breathing for sure, but it will keep doing itself regardless.

4) Posture can't be altered. Once it's bad, there's nothing I can do about it.
I once had a quite bent-over and elderly student who complained about upper back pain. After some intelligent conversations - and using my touch - her pains disappeared. Her bent-over form did not. Form is not Posture. NOT EVER.

5) Good Posture is unnatural and must be superimposed on the body
And all the world is terrible. And everyone is evil. And you should never try.
Really?

6) You are either born with good Posture, or you are not.
The first part is correct, at least.

7) Expensive chairs and better desks are the secrets to good Posture.
This idea deserves a tirade if ever there was a need for one. This makes a lot of money for a lot of people, and it solves about 17.5% of the problem. Yeah, there's some truth in getting a good chair – I won't deny you that – but the best chair in the world can beat your brain. And your brain is running your Posture, not the chair.

So there you have it folks – all in one email.

Now what isn't in all those myths is responsibility, i.e. response-ability. You have the ability to respond constructively to situations that stress you out. Posture is about intelligence, not positions.

Meanwhile – what can you do that's constructive, useful and WILL  improve your Posture, Health and Happiness? Simple:
