A 3 Step Teaching Formula to Make Meaning out of Mystery

Yesterday in class, a trainee said the most mysterious thing.

She is a professional singer. Obviously, her comment was drawing upon a wealth of experience, unknown to me. She said something like:

"I want to sing along with the breath so that it moves equally together."

I opened and closed my mouth three times - and silently said inside:

"I have no idea what she is talking about."

Which isn't to say - SHE doesn't know what she's talking about - as I am sure she did.

Welcome to another BodyChance training class. I decided to articulate my inner confusion - because my trainees are always thrilled when I do that.

"The trouble for me now - as I am not a singer - is that I have no way to relate to the language of her request."

Everyone nodded. Good. Now what?

I used my 3 step formula - you can use it in any situation when you cannot understand what your student is talking about.

The result of that?

How she coordinated her breath on the first sound jumped out at me.

"Oh" - I thought - "That's probably it."

I suggested a new way to think, used my touch to remind her, and a very different sound emerged! She smiled - it solved the concern she had. Lesson finished.
