A Lesson for our Profession in How Disney Reinvented Cartoons

Before Walt Disney, cartoons were nothing.

Stick figures doing gags in an illogical succession - splattering emotions without reference to character or narrative. Bodies that had no regard for gravity or form.

Disney changed all that, and in doing so invented a new Profession. Animators flocked from New York in the late 20s to the West Coast - to join the revolution in animation led by Disney's simple innovations.

And the revolution was precipitated by easy-to-understand insights:

1. Don't add music to a cartoon, use music to make the cartoon

2. Storyboard the whole cartoon before you draw it

3. Add motion to other parts of the whole

4. Animate the personality of the character

Looking at these - and many others detailed in Neal Gabler's 2006 book on Walt Disney - it's hard to understand why these were revolutionary.

They make so much sense.

They are too obvious.

But not then. Not in the 20~30s - when Walt Disney was laying the foundations for modern animation - then it was revolutionary.

I feel Alexander's work is in this kind of position today.

People are no longer inspired by the work. In so many places, interest is down. People can't see its relevance to them.

Can Alexander's discovery be repurposed and engineered for businesses?

Rich, ubiquitous corporations seem to rule the world these days - they have power, they have money and they have influence.

And they have no inkling of how Alexander's work could significantly impact all manner of problems they have. Victorinox saw a 40% improvement in productivity on their assembly lines after five years of regular Alexander work for their members.

Why is this an almost isolated case? Why hasn't this been repeated more often?

That failure is our own.

Because it is not obvious how to do this.

As I survey the scene and start encouraging my ATSuccess members to seek work with businesses, I intuit that we are in the beginnings of a new era. I think this is the future of the work. I believe it deeply. There are many simple ideas we can implement - looking back it will seem obvious that it is the way to do it.

Alexander's work is a Force of Nature - and it can be that within corporations.

And this great project will have its humble beginnings on May 8th.

Already, the successes are more than I could imagine.

It is so simple, and I marvel why it took so long for me to see it.
