A Person Called Guilt (Have I Done Enough?!)

Dec 11, 2017

Do you ever feel guilty?

It's human phenomena - born from being the most successful community creature, like, EVER.

Forget bees and ants - they didn't make it to the moon.

Because we are so dependent upon each other - society cannot function without universal agreement and co-operation - compliant interdependency is at the core of our success as a species. Therefore we possess a deep-seated biological mechanism to ensure our compliance.

Guilt.

I "should" do this, and I am "expected" to do that. It's part of being a "good husband" and "trusted teacher" and "friend who sticks by you." We set up "values" then gauge our performance against these fictional constructs.

Fictional, because in ancient Roman society it was okay for a crowd to watch two men fight to the death - try staging that today, and you are a pariah. I am NOT personally advocating THAT, I am only demonstrating how radically values can shift. Warriors' took adolescent lovers; people dipped their bread in oil held by an acetabulum of a dead slave; humans were bought and sold like animals.

All considered "normal" at the time.

It's the mechanism that fascinates me - we set up a value, then live to it as though it were universal and true. Yet it's mostly made up, primarily a fiction. Just one we believe in fervently.

They are all over the place, and my plan today is to dismantle one of them for you. It's this:

"I should apply everything I learn."

Crap. We gather information so we can discard most of it. Maybe between 5~20% of what we learn is useful.

And between 1~5% is actionable.

I see it in ATSuccess all the time - people getting "guilty" because they didn't watch all the videos, they didn't finish all the worksheets, they missed too many meetings.

I put out a great volume of information in MasterMinders every month. This month I making 4 videos on How To Build Your List. Next month, I am working with Rossella Buono to explore how to use Facebook Events to fill your workshops - which Rosella has been doing for 4+ years now.

You don't need to apply everything you learn.

You listen for the 1% that you can cherish and implement. Trouble is, you don't know what the 1% idea is until you have heard it all. It jumps up out of abundance, not scarcity.

That's why MasterMinders is a great idea. It will pay for itself by helping you find that one life hack: which will gain you more students; or keep the ones you have; or get them to do more than they are right now.

Who knows what?

That's the point. Until you join, it's not clear what you get. You just need something because you feel stuck. Come find out what that is...
