A Simple Idea to Rock the World
Mar 09, 2018When Copernicus suggested that our earth rotated the sun, all hell broke loose.
It was a simple idea that rocked the world.
It is always is a simple idea that rocks the world.
Gandhi: the English must peacefully leave India.
Oh really? Oh yes.
Even the Einstein's Theory of Relativity - which is the definition of complexity itself - starts out with an elementary idea.
As Einstein sat in the tram, going home from his tedious job at the Patent Office, he stared at the town clock telling him it was 5 O'clock. Then he wondered…
… what if I was going away from the clock, as fast as the light from the clock was coming towards me - wouldn't that clock always be showing five o'clock? Therefore - once I was going at the speed of light - time would stop …
And so time and space became material matters - an extraordinary development.
Alexander had a simple idea (use affects function); so did Steve Jobs (a computer you can use) and Bill Gates (a PC on everyone's desk) etc.
Jumping down from these epochal heights, simple ideas also drive successful new businesses.

Remember how the iPod started a revolution?
The point is - the ingredients were all there before Apple came along. Toshiba had developed a 1.8inch hard drive and had no idea what to do with it. Jon Rubinstein, Jobs top hardware guy, immediately knew it was the final piece in Job's digital hub, and the first iPod was born.
Simple ideas are complex to deploy.
The involve not just one, but a series of simple ideas connected together by an expansive point of view and a number of different technologies.
While Alexander's final idea - that use affects function - is simplicity itself, the definition of "use" - with the primacy of head/spinal relationship - starts you on a deep journey of discovery to find the "meanswhereby" FM's insight can be deployed. It gets complex.
Simple ideas have complex backing. They are never really simple.
Copernicus delivered vast amounts of supporting data; Einstein came up with his incomprehensible calculations. There are multiple ideas linked together.
I believe there is a simple series of ideas that can transform our profession:
The first: target corporations, not individuals.
The second: offer results, not services.
The third: calibrate your payment by an objective metric.
Like all simple ideas, the devil is in the details.
Over three months, starting in April, I will be delivering the first detailed description of how you can start deploying this plan. I believe it will eventually change the face of our Profession, and I believe we must work cooperatively for it to succeed.
My first step is in London, where I will be presenting my "simple idea"
Come along, be part of something very new.
