A Vital Fact that Escapes Attention

Apr 16, 2017

Most people, when planning their website, worry about the content.

Wrong thing to worry about.

***

(actually, it's better not to worry about anything. Shantideva, an Indian sage in the 8th century, had the final words to say about that:

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying?
If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

Thanks for putting an end to that one Shanti-san)

****

The reason the content of your website is the wrong thing to - think - about, is because you do what most people do - completely ignore the only issue that matters.

It fascinates me how this vital fact escapes most people's attention - even me if I am honest. I also think about:

  • what my website will say
  • how I will guide people
  • what I want them to do
  • etc. etc.

All very reasonable right? WRONG.

Then what's missing?

THE PEOPLE!

***

As Lincoln in his famous Gettysburg address:

Of the people, for the people and by the people.

OF THE PEOPLE…

Your practise exists once real people know about it, and seek it.

A beautiful website, that ignores your current obscurity, is like an oasis in a desert. If no-one knows it is there, and there is no life surrounding it, what function does it have other than making you feel better?

Don't build your website in the desert - put it in a busy place.

A busy place is where people are already looking, tourists searching for their kind of happiness. Sorry, but no one is buying tickets to cruise Matthias Village. It is not a popular destination "of the people".

FOR THE PEOPLE…

OK, you found a busy place to put your website. (A niche, a community, a problem)

But they can still walk right past your front door.

Think about making it a place FOR THEM. What will attract them?

In Japan it fascinates me that every magazine article about BodyChance insists on adding a picture of our studio. And the start of the article will talk about "the atmosphere" of our studio.

Your website is "for the people", not "for you".

BY THE PEOPLE…

If you ask, they will tell you. Have you asked?

When planning your website, let it be done "by the people". Here's some things to do first:

  • interview your students
  • list their ages and gender
  • note their professions and interests
  • be aware of the popular times for coming
  • be super aware of the reasons they had for coming.

If you are a new teacher, then research this stuff. At ATSuccess we show you how.

People know what they want, even if you think they want the wrong thing.

Don't be stupid - listen to the people. Accepting their ridiculous theories and frustrating practises is the road to redemption. Use THEIR language and concepts, not yours. Because what they want is already contained in what you have to give.

People do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

Clever websites with adroit explanations are not serving this need. And most Alexander Technique websites ASSUME that people are looking for the Alexander Technique.

They aren't.
