Jeremy’s Secret Sauce II – The “Secret” Mental Acrobatics of Effective Thinking

First, I need to make a disclaimer.

I am not a trained physical therapist – everything I write is entirely speculative, based upon my personal experiences with injury and rehabilitation. If you are injured, nothing I suggest here will be damaging – it’s what you don’t do that could put you in jeopardy. Be careful, seek expert help and, yes - join me in an alternative journey towards enhancing your performance…

***

The organisation of movement in our Self fundamentally involves recurring loops between three interacting phenomena:

1. Abstract intention – generated within the brain
2. Material effects – through nerves, muscles and bone
3. Sensory feedback – from multiple sensory systems

My precious teacher Marjori Barstow (1899~1995 not 1985!) put it far more simply than that. Here’s Marj’s version:

Something happens, then…

1. You think
2. You move
3. You feel

And what you feel modifies your thinking.

My meditation only involves thinking (1) because postural optimisation (2) does itself, while sensory feedback (3) is passive – you can’t turn feelings off, so why would you need to turn them on? Therefore, the only area where you can effectively influence your movement is within your thinking. As Marj once put it:

“We don’t always know what we are feeling, but we can always know what we are thinking.”

This is the first challenge people have when studying Alexander’s discovery. Every now and again in my BodyChance training school, I pose a general question to students:

“Hands up those who are puzzled, confused or even confronted by the constant Alexander admonition: ‘You are not thinking; you are trying to feel’.”

Most people in the class put up their hands.

In Alexander training your mental acrobatics start with identifying thinking. What is thinking? How does it differ from sensing, feeling or emotion? Do feelings have thoughts? If so, are those “felt thoughts” really feelings and not thinking? Have you even thought about this? Ha ha…

“Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably the reason why so few engage in it.”

Henry Ford was talking about Alexander-defined thinking – which is pure, abstract and immaterial. It’s like knowledge, and knowledge has no limits. But is knowledge material? No. Is knowledge energetic? No. Does knowledge exist? Yes. If knowledge is not energy, if knowledge is not material, yet it still exists… what is it?

“Information is information, not matter or energy.”
Norbert Wiener, the founder of Cybernetics.

Along with matter and energy – which are interchangeable (E = mc2) – knowledge is a third entity in our universe. Unlike matter or energy, knowledge has no form inherent to itself. For example, Aton Chekhov wrote “The Three Sisters” but did the three sisters ever exist? No, of course not. Does a play about the three sisters exist? Yes. But how does the play exist? It exists as knowledge: code saved to a computer, words printed in a book, memory stored in an actor’s brain. But Chekhov’s Three Sisters is not the computer or the book or the person’s brain – it exists, but only just.

Thinking is like this – it is information.

Although it has no material or energetic existence, its transformative powers are extraordinary. People sacrifice their lives for ideals, which live as information. Evolving information lies at the heart of the power humans have to both shape the world around them and shape themselves.

The real challenge of Alexander's discovery is to discern the distinction between thinking and everything else. This is the first step – being able to do that. Without it, nothing else works. Of course, this step is based on information that can reshape your Self.

What is the “information” we will meditate upon?

Stay tuned.
