Alexander Mental Mapping

Jun 25, 2023

Previously, I wrote about Fixing Sally’s Tight Tummy.

Contained within that story was a radical idea - did you notice it?

It’s this: what you think - i.e. your ‘directions’ - to bring about appropriate coordination work best when sculptured by the situation you are in…

Studying math

Must you always think the same “Alexander directions” no matter what you do?

Reading FM’s writings, it would seem so. And for most of my teaching life, I have thought so.

Now I don’t.

Yes, I want my head/spine/limbs/self moving as a coordinated whole - but every situation requires a new invention of how I mentally coordinate my movement. Using the same formula over and over again may not be the most effective way of organising my coordination.

I’m throwing that out there and welcome your comments.

For now, I will wait until another example appears in my teaching and write about it. If you need more background, go back to my blog: “Fixing Sally’s Tight Tummy” where I demonstrate the application of this idea.

And soon, I will open up a monthly live class to all comers with access to everything I have produced for, well, wait and see…

You’ll be happy.
