Alexander's Discovery, not Alexander Technique.

I started studying Alexander’s work 50 years ago.

What were you doing then?

I was a young man keen to find out the truth. 

I've written my story elsewhere - ask me if you want to read it.

I gave up a promising career as an actor and director in Australia. Instead, I travelled to London in 1976 to become a teacher of Alexander's discovery.

Why was I so keen?

I wonder. 

Later, I tried to get back to the theatre and film world. When I was 39, I applied – along with another 900 people – for 4 positions in the Australian Film and Television School. An Institution that has generated it's fair share of Academy award winners. I got shortlisted to the final 10 candidates, then failed to get in.

Instead, I found my Self in small working group planning an 11-day Event with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Sydney. I'd only recently become a Buddhist, and it was my entrance to a new community of people dedicated to doing good in the world. It was a full-time work for a year – an exhaustive and exhilarating experience.

So I gave up my arts aspirations and turned back to Alexander's discovery.

After a three month retreat 5,000metres up in the sky – in a little Himalaya hut that my deceased Lama had built – I descended into Japan and met my wife-to-be at the airport. 

And so began my journey introducing Alexander's discovery into Japan.

With the help of Yuzuru Katagiri and many others, Japan is now unique in hosting the largest and most successful school since FM taught his first lesson in 1894. BodyChance has produced over 100 Graduates, with another 116 currently in training. 

It now also rates as one of the longest running schools in the world, and it certainly doesn’t look like ending any time soon! I’d give it another 50 years at least.

As Walter Carrington once remarked to me before passing away (Walter carried on FM Alexander's training school after he passed away):

"It's quite an enterprise."
