An American Witch Hunt

30 years ago he did a drunken, stupid thing.

Inexcusable. But like a Spanish Inquisition, let's burn our sinner live at the stake. His desperate screams and the smell of his roasted flesh will satisfy the righteous indignation of his accusers.

Salem. 1692. And it still goes on today.

It was a transgression, a stupid mistake - maybe even a severe fault of character. We can't know it is true, but innocent-until-proven-guilty is for a courtroom, not the media.

No, let's decide he is guilty.

Let's cancel anything to do with him. No matter that hundreds of people may lose their jobs. No matter that the allegation may be a lie. No matter that he can't even remember it, and apologised.

Oh too late for deep apologies, too late for any kind of trial.

We want justice.

NOW.

Let's burn the bugger. Let's crucify him and ask questions later.

Who am I talking about?

It could be any number of people through history: Protestants, Catholics, Africans with tyres around their neck, children hacked to death in Somalia - find your victim.

And beside your victim you will find the righteous: those who would do good by heinous acts. Odious people shining fanatical glee.

I don't think it is possible to shame another, without that shame belonging to you. I feel ashamed today. This act of terror, this witch hunt - who stops to ask the question that Jesus posed to us - let he throw the first stone that has never sinned.

The Alexander way is to take responsibly for me, and stop trying to run you. Hands that invite, rather than manipulate. Words that question, rather than prescribe.

There are no victims in this world, hence there can be no witch hunts.
