Being a Devil is a Gift From Heaven

When my daughter Grace was 7, I saw her enter her 10-year-old elder sister's room while said girl - Angelica - was typing on her newly acquired desktop.

Angelica did not even look up from the screen…

"Get out"

was the perfunctory message.

Grace quickly did an about turn, and scooted out.

I witnessed this exchange, and marvelled at the devil in Angelica, the immediate compliance of Grace, and the raw, rough quality of the whole communication.

What was going on here???

Fast forward 10 years, and here's Grace telling me…

"Dad, the only person I really trust is Angelica. I know she's always going to tell me exactly what she thinks. I don't doubt her. You daddy, well… You're going to be 'nice' and I can't really trust what you say. Not always."

OUCH !

The devil - in the form of direct, honest communication - is the gift. What I perceived as cruel, blunt and unnecessarily forceful, well - it turns out to be the character-building stuff of a long-term trusting relationship.

Can you be that honest with your students?

Can you start to tell them what you want; make your own conditions; stop being a lap dog wagging your tail and agreeing with every 'um' and 'err' they throw at you?

"Um, I can't do Friday this week."

or

"Err, I have to cancel. I'll ring you."

Or

"Can I pay next week?"

and so on.
