Being Dangerously Dumb
Jan 29, 2020A break is as good as a holiday, that's what I heard long ago.
I've lived by that, and spice up my life by doing unexpected, out-of-habit things. Some are big, some small. One of the strangest things I ever did was write a letter to all my school friends telling them exactly how I saw them.
Next day in school, there was a long embarrassing silence that lasted all week! None of us knew how to process what I had just done, so we pretended it hadn't happened.
When was the last time you did something unusual for you?
Here's a selection of ideas for that:
- Make an unusual clothes choice for you;
- Chat to a stranger somewhere, even just a smile;
- Eat something weird, like an insect.
- Use a day to get out to the bush;
- Tell a friend something you have been thinking about them, but never said.
Even if you don't act, merely thinking about unusual behaviour activates new pathways in your brain. Habit is a double-edged sword.
It is both incredibly convenient, and dangerously dumb.
Incredibly convenient, because we get a lot of complicated things done without having to use too much apparent brainpower – such as driving a car, or using a keyboard.
Dangerously dumb, because some complex activities can cause your early death. Habits that are less than wonderful are often resistant to change. I know, because for a lot of my life I struggled with different kinds of addictions. I still have them, but most are relatively harmless now (like too much chocolate).
It took a lot of brainpower to change some of my most harmful habits. And this is a life skill that we don't get taught at school.
How do you change a habit?
A habit is a behaviour – it is a cluster of beliefs, motivations and, most surprisingly, movements, or Posture. Yes, every behaviour – no matter what it is – is wired into your Posture; into your manner of movement.
Because Posture is your fundamental behaviour.
It defines your purpose – to survive, you must move.
Therefore, to change a habit of any kind, you must change your Posture.
As someone who has studied Alexander's Discovery for a long time, you are ready to take on many new and different kinds of habits.
Those habits are called "beliefs".
Like:
- I don't like marketing and selling; I just want to teach.
- I can't write a blog, email or sales letter
- I'm not good a business
- I don't have enough
That's a shortlist, but for most of us, it goes on and on. Obstacles to being successful that are created and maintained by a belief structure that doesn't question itself.
ATSuccess Foundations is an Alexander-styled coaching program that uses the tools you already have to change habits that are less than wonderful.
The aim is to professionalize your practice, so it works and produces more students for you.
You get many modules of advice, and a chance to join me in group coaching sessions once a month to point you in the right direction.
