Being Weak

May 03, 2017

"You're all weak."

At BodyChance, most of my staff are teachers who have trained with me. They spend their time teaching / marketing for the school.

The non-teaching work is administration of that activity.

Occasionally we need the services of professional people who have no experience or knowledge of Alexander's discovery. Over the years, many of these people have worked for BodyChance. But one talented individual stands out, because one day she declared:

"Trainees in BodyChance are all weak."

"Am I weak too?" I asked her.

"Yes" was her immediate reply.

I'd had to admire her honesty!

But when I pushed to get more specifics, she had little to add. I realised that she didn't understand herself. All she knew, is that trainees in BodyChance has this peculiar quality, and her instinctive conclusion was that they were all "weak".

Well of course it is absurd to suggest that an entire group of people, without exception, are all weak. I think she was on to something, but it wasn't about "weak"

But then, what was it that she sensed about us?

The opposite of weak is tough. Were we not tough enough at BodyChance?

This person had worked in many other Japanese companies that require dutiful commitment towards the company itself.

I have heard the horror stories.

One of our trainees previously worked in IT company. He told me he would often sleep on cardboard on his office floor. I had to ask him three times before I got it.

It was work late, sleep on the floor, start early: 6 days week, Sundays off.

Now that's tough!

When you live like that, any less must look weak.

Still, I wasn't convinced so I asked a friend, a fellow teacher, what he thought she meant? His reply was interesting:

"She means: 'We are not mean.' "

I thought - that's a nice self-serving interpretation - and I still wasn't convinced. However, it got me thinking about the people I know who are "mean" to my eyes…

Immediately I recalled guys I had met through my membership in a costly mentoring program with Perry Marshall in the United States. To get in, you needed to be a self-starter of a company turning over at least a million a year. I qualified, just. But some of these guys were individually turning over a million a month! And doing very well financially as a result.

And they were mean.

Not unfriendly or vindictive, not that kind of mean.

No, they were thoughtful, intelligent masters of their world, willing to engage and discuss what they had discovered. The "meanness" came out more when they talked about the people they had to deal with in their day-to-day business.

"Idiots" was a favourite description of one the richest guys.

And then I got it!

Ego and Alexander's discovery do not mix well.

Doubt is an essential quality of a seeker, and Self-Belief - which leads to confidence - is an essential quality of a successful money-maker. It's rare that doubt and confidence accompany each other.

People confuse doubt with weakness, and confidence with ego.

They are not the same. Doubt has at its foundation in the belief that there is more to know.

Confidence has at its true foundation the belief that you can.

Doubters often suspect something is wrong with them, while confident people are often arrogant to the extreme about what they "know".

I decided that what she was seeing was not "weakness" but universal the "doubt" of trainees in BodyChance. And "doubt" is an essential ingredient of learning…

Doubting that you "know" leads you to seek.

Doubting that you're "right" leads to you to question.

One of the ways we concretely explore this "doubt" in BodyChance is through exploring your self-knowledge of how you are designed to move. This is BodyChance's 2 year BodyThinking certificate course.

It is also the content of BodyThinking Online - my comprehensive course of 66 videos and 18 hours exploring how to co-operate with your movement design.

But you don't go into BodyThinking Online "knowing", you go in "doubting" You can think you know it all, but the second you are willing to doubt that, a gate opens to let realizations flow into your consciousness.

Join BodyThinking Online if you doubt. Because discovery happens fattest in the presence of "doubt." Doubt makes you hungry to learn. Too many people think they already "know" which serves as a kind of active ignorance.

In my experience, every one of us carries confused thinking about our design.

Therefore, it is curiosity that "doubts" what you know.

I say, if that is "weak" then…
