Bespoke Movement Plans

Dec 14, 2019

I guess you might be wondering – what is a Bespoke Movement Plan?

Well first off, what is a movement plan?

At BodyChance, we have a lot of people who are accomplished at highly skilled activities. There are competitive sports players, musicians of all types, martial artists, singers and actors and even a Pilates Instructor.

Each of these individuals – during their training – offered up intricate movement patterns that needed analysis. The reason for the analysis was that their skill – as it was performed in class – was not bringing the person the result they desired.

As a teacher of Alexander's Discovery, it can be intimidating at first to be presented with these complex requests. Since I am not a competitive athlete, for example, what business have I in trying to advise about a movement sequence I might be seeing for the first time?

And this is where movement analysis is critical.

Any complex movement, say - playing vibrato on a flute – can be understood as having two components. There is the primary coordination of the player; then there is the specific skill set required to play vibrato on the flute.

Now – I have no knowledge about how to play vibrato on a flute. However, I can see the primary coordinating movements of a player who is doing that. And each player is unique. No two players of vibrato on the flute are coordinating their whole Selves in the same manner.

My job is not to deal directly with the action of playing vibrato on the flute; my job is to understand how the underlying coordination of the player is supporting that specific action.

This underlying coordination is something most people cannot see.

Alexander discovered that any action – playing vibrato on a flute, kicking a soccer ball or typing on a computer – is supported in precisely the same way by head/spine relationship.

In BodyThinking, we give these two movement components different names:

- the playing of vibrato, kicking a ball or typing are all called "Activity Plans."
- the support of the head/spine is called a "Coordination Plan."

Coordination plans are universal and the same for all people.
Activity plans are unique and specific to each person's skill set and desire.

Together they produce your very own Bespoke Movement Plan.

And the result – which is why people keep coming to BodyChance to train – is a significant development in your skills. If you have been hitting the ceiling in your efforts to improve, this is how you break through. This improvement comes from studying your BodyThinking Online course, together with direct insight from Alexander's Discovery from your own experience.
