After the Dublin Congress – given the enthusiasm of participants - Betsy & I got on a ZOOM call to discuss the idea for a new “Alexander’s Discoveries & Trauma” training for ATeachers, trainees and long-term students.

I shared with Betsy some wisdom from my Irish London-based mentor, Megan Mecedo. Megan knows that Alexander types are closer to artists than business people. As such, she declared to me that we need to live in an Art Paradigm, NOT a Business Paradigm.

What’s the difference?

The Business Paradigm uses terminology from war. It’s a battle, a fight for customers. It’s structured hierarchically like a fighting force: after the CEO, there are other “Officers” for Logistics, Finances, Sales, etc. There are ‘cut-throat’ competitors that you have to ‘shoot’ off emails about all the time. It’s a dog-eat-dog arena.

Megan suggests that we give ourselves a lot of guilt for not doing things that we didn’t need to do in the first place! Sounds almost Alexandrian. Megan got me thinking about how to develop this new course for Betsy. But first I needed to know something…

“Betsy – have you ever run a training like this before?”

After a moment of reflective pause, Betsy answered: “No”

That was when I knew we needed a “ride-along” with Betsy to kick this program off:

Megan invented the idea of a “ride-along” as a part of her alternate Art Paradigm concept for artists. Artists are continually renewing their work, experimenting, and changing how they do things. Alexander teachers are similar – we evolve. Therefore, a new work with an Artist can evolve from a ride-along with them as they create it. Betsy is going to develop and preview the outlines of her Certificate Program through a series of three webinars this coming October, December and February next year.

Of course, Betsy has worked with many ATeachers, helping them both personally and professionally. However, this is her first time to create a more systematic and thorough review of the skills an ATeacher needs to recognise and deal with trauma when working with others.

BETSY’S RIDE-ALONG WEBINARS

Betsy’s new certificate training program is called:

“Alexander's Discoveries & Trauma – Level One”

These three webinars will help you decide if you want to join the full Certificate Program.

In the first webinar, Betsy will revisit the ideas from her Dublin Congress Keynote that got everyone excited in the first place. This is your chance to hear new stories, understand more deeply – what is the work? why do we need it? In the second webinar, Betsy will share from her three books. In this way, a course Curriculum will emerge – what will you learn? how does it work? Finally, in her third Webinar, Betsy will introduce you to several ATeachers who have studied with her. They will share how the work has changed the way they teach, and what you can expect from joining the training.

Betsy’s full training Program will be held over 8 days, 4 days in April and another 4 days in October, 2026. The program will cost $4,750, which includes the eight full days of training and lunch every day. However, you can join the Preview Webinar Series for $195. This gives you a chance to experience Betsy’s trauma work: see how it works, watch others, then decide if you want to join the full Certificate Program in 2026.

ダブリン・コングレスの後――参加者の熱気を受けて――ベッツィと私はZOOMで打ち合わせをしました。テーマは「アレクサンダーの発見とトラウマ」に関する、新しい教師・訓練生・長期受講生向けのトレーニングです。

私は、ロンドン在住のアイルランド人メンター、メーガン・メセドから受けた知恵をベッツィにシェアしました。メーガンはこう言います。アレクサンダー系の人々はビジネスパーソンというよりアーティストに近い。だから私たちは〈ビジネス・パラダイム〉ではなく〈アート・パラダイム〉に生きるべきだ、と。

では、その違いとは？

ビジネス・パラダイムは戦争の言葉で語られます。顧客をめぐる「戦い」、競合との「戦争」。組織はCEOの下にロジスティクス、財務、営業などの「将校」が控える軍隊型。四六時中「撃ち落とす」メールを書き合い、ライバルを蹴落とす世界。まさに弱肉強食の闘技場です。

わかりますか？

メーガンは、私たちは本来やらなくてよかったことを「やらなかった」と自分を責めがちだと指摘します。どこかアレクサンダー的ですね！ そんな話から、この新コースをどう設計するかを考え始めたのです。けれども、まず聞いておきたいことがありました。

「ベッツィ、こうしたトレーニングをやったことはある？」

しばし考え込んだベッツィの答えは――「ないわ」。

その瞬間、私は直感しました。このプログラムを始めるには、ベッツィと一緒に〈ライドアロング〉をするしかないと。

メーガンが生み出した〈ライドアロング〉の発想は、アート・パラダイムの延長にあります。アーティストは常に創作を更新し、実験し、やり方を変えます。アレクサンダー教師も同じです――私たちは進化します。だから新しい仕事は、アーティストと並走しながら、その創造の過程を共にする〈ライドアロング〉から生まれるのです。ベッツィは今秋10月、そして12月、さらに来年2月に3回のウェビナーを通じて、この新しいサーティフィケート・プログラムの骨子を形にしていきます。

この3回のウェビナーを通じて、フル・プログラム参加を検討できます。ベッツィは第1回ウェビナーで、ダブリン・コングレスの基調講演を再訪し、新たなエピソードを交えながら「この仕事は何か？なぜ必要か？」を掘り下げます。第2回では自身の3冊の著作をもとに、カリキュラムの輪郭が浮かび上がります。「何を学ぶのか？どのように機能するのか？」。そして第3回では、ベッツィと学んだ数名の教師が登壇し、「この仕事が自分の教え方をどう変えたか」「参加するとどんな体験が得られるか」を語ります。
