Beware the Freebieites - Blind Innocents Appraising an Elephant

Every market has them - generous, prolific souls that offer answers to the problems that plague you: how to teach, how to market, how to manage your time, wife/husband and weight. No end to it.

You'd think - with all this free stuff, why pay for anything anymore?

Good question. And here's the next question:

Do you remember the parable of the three blind men and the elephant?

They did not know what an elephant was and experienced it only by touch. Soon, all three had different opinions - none had the whole picture.

That's a key drawback of relying on freebies.

It's all about parts - where's the total system?

People see other teachers doing something and think - that's clever! I am going to do that too! - and off they rush, implementing the new idea. Trouble is, that idea probably has years of trial and error behind it, a 5-layers-deep understanding. Are you getting that too?

Most likely not. Instead…

It's like thinking you can fix up the measles by ripping off your red, bumpy pimples. All you're left with is a scarred arm, and the pimples soon pop up again anyway. Not a great plan.

Rushing around on Facebook - downloading the latest gizmo, participating in yet another talk feast group - is not much different. Even getting advice on one problem, without seeing the whole, is worth being suspicious about. Something familiar here?

People trying to fix problems by playing around with parts. It's sincere enough, and people mean well - it just doesn't work. It's not a plan for success in the long term.
