BodyChance in London 2015

A voice called out from the milieu "Jeremy!" I thought: "So many children called that since Jeremy Irons got famous." Again: "Jeremy!!" It was Peter Nobes, Alexander Technique teacher and good friend, walking along the Strand as we three returned to our hotel. An overriding intention of my stay in London is to start kicking off plans to open BodyChance here in 2015. First I need a Brett. So we settled down in the American Bar to an enthusiastic conversation, while the girls took their well deserved 12 hour jetlag sleep… Life is full of coincidences and chance meetings, or it's not – and the world plays out before our eyes in a perfect design to our wishes. Harmony, I am discovering, does itself. My job is to continue intention, but have no specificity other than how it unfolds to me. Fun. The recipe for a successful Alexander Technique studio over the long term is this:

1. Find a star
2. Find a niche
3. Have service product that appeals
4. Have a business model that pays
5. Set it up to go from the start
6. Wait 1 year to break even
7. Wait 10 years to pay off all the debt

  And make sure you have enough money to last the distance – your own or someone else's. Unfortunately, not even a fool is going to invest money in an Alexander Technique business. Why would they? In over 100 years you can't point to anyone showing an outstanding ROI. In London, I am told by Peter, 96% of members of STAT earn under £20,000 a year. That's an old statistic (from a STAT survey a decade ago – please someone update the info in the comment box below) but abysmal enough to report here as a loose fact from the past. What chance have you? It's a tough going and teams trump individuals when it comes to building an Alexander Technique business. That's my own bias of course, and not entirely true – plenty of examples of successful teachers working alone – but there is only so far you can go, only so much impact you can make.
