Can You Pass The Alexander Lie Test?

To qualify for the Alexander lie test you must travel in cars (or buses/taxis), use a smart phone (or iPad/computer) and know about Alexander's discovery.

If you this true for you (?) then take the test:

1. Do you want to keep travelling in a car?
2. Do you want to keep using a smart phone?
3. Do you want to keep thinking about your head/spine relationship?

To pass this test you needed to answer an unequivocal yes to all three questions.

It’s binary. Like being pregnant is binary. There’s no middle ground here, except in your imagination. Anyone who suffers occupies the middle ground, because they are trying to imagine a world that doesn’t exist for them. Pointless.

What is the point of the Alexander lie test?

It illuminates how connected to reality you are. People connected to reality are healthier than those living in a dream of unrequited desire. When you say you don’t want (what you continue to do) you are a just a few threads away from unravelling into depression and despair.

The liars say they don’t want to, but have to/need to/are forced to etc. etc. They ignore the inconvenient truth that they rely on smart phones, cars and obsessing about their co-ordination.

And this is a good thing!

What have cars, iPhones and Alexander's discovery got in common?

They are all things people didn’t know they wanted until they got them, and then wondered how they ever survived without them. There's a famous quote from Henry Ford which goes:

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.

Alexander's discovery is the same. No-one is going to tell you:

I want to take complete responsibility for my co-ordination, all the time. 

On the contrary – they want YOU to solve THEIR problem.

People won’t want Alexander's discovery until after they have it.

And this presents a unique marketing problem for all teachers of Alexander's discovery. And as a Profession, our response to this unique conundrum has been less than wonderful. Led by FM's attack on the British army, we continue to criticize anyone who holds a different view.

Teachers still disparage the poor ignorant souls (our prospective students):

You want a better posture? Oh you cluck, it’s not about posture! Posture is 2 dimensional. It’s stiff. I hate that word. I won’t use THAT word in my marketing, no way.

You’re in good company, that’s for sure.

The rude and uncompromising Steve Jobs was renowned for ignoring market research and focus groups – he eschewed all that for his own instinct. He did that because he knew he was ahead of the game – just as you know Alexander's discovery is ahead of the game. It is. You know that. I know that too.

Jobs had supreme confidence that his idea would satisfy a person once they experienced it. Jobs was confident in the vision of his service – what his devices could do for people. It wasn’t about him, it was about what he could do for you.

Do you have a Jobs-like confidence in Alexander's discovery?

You will when you get that it’s not about you. I see a lot of teachers needlessly suffer from feeling inadequate in teaching Alexander's discovery, particularly in groups. What I see is not a person lacking confidence in their own ability, I see a person lacking understanding in the power of Alexander's discovery to effect transformation in their students.

It’s about the students, stupid.

Understand your students. Listen to them. Survey them. That’s why you’re plum-footed – you don’t know your students well enough. And because of that, you are unable to translate for them how Alexander's discovery can deliver on their “faster horses” desires.

You need to walk a delicate path between integrity and illusion.

The Illusion: you can solve their problems in the way they imagine you will. (faster horses)
Your Integrity: you deliver on your promise in a way that startles and delights. (the work)
