Communication in a Foreign Land

Jun 26, 2017

This Daily Blog is emailed out to around 500 people, both in Japan and overseas.

The readers of the original English version are a mixture of AT teachers, trainees, some devoted AT students, friends and ex-students.

(BTW: You can sign up if you don't get it by email here)

In Japan, it goes out mainly to my trainees – I have 137 of them now – and Graduates – now 80. The rest, I don’t know. BodyChance Basic members, public and friends I guess.

Except my staff tell me – NO WAY – can these emails go out to the 17,832 people that currently subscribe to one or more of our BodyChance mailmag lists.

Like, NO WAY.

Oh.

Instead USK - BodyChance General Manager - has instructed each of our 7 full-time teachers to take one my Dailies, then “interpret” it for the everyday Japanese reader.

7 days of the week, 7 Dailies, 7 teachers.

Convenient.

This amuses me no end: the mad english-speaking Professor running amok in Japan.

I am being translated --> then that translation is being culled --> then it is explained by another teacher --> then presented to the Japanese public.

Each BodyChance staff teacher extracts from my email some clear and common scense idea (I do have them) and they leave out the rest of the weird Dr Jeremy’s ranting and ravings, which for me is half the fun. Sigh.

My slightly wacky, delighful Japanese acquaintences from Hieidaria, believe it is because I am a bit “Japanese peculiar” that BodyChance is still managing to survive today in a harsh, educational environment with the high-end prices that we still charge.

Idk. Maybe.

The point of all this being – communication is an ardous process. It takes time, practise, sensitivity, creativity, detirmination, meaning and love. And it needs to be practised.

One of the smartest ways to do that is to write about your experiences.

Teach a group, then quickly write up a lesson.

Let people know about it.

That attracts them.

Starting July 10th (I wrote another date wrongly before) I will be running an 8 week online course. You can register and get more details from me there…

How To Teach Groups - Online and Offline.
