Criticism Is a Near Death Experience
Jun 28, 2017When I suggest to new members of ATSuccess - please write about your work every day - a sudden incredibility arises almost automatically within them.
AUTOMATICALLY.
They say:
"EVERY DAY?! I can't do that."
Do you think you have nothing to say?
Nonsense. If you teach one lesson a day, you say more than you could ever fit in one email. You are a living, breathing content creator, whether you recognise it or not.
The obstacle is never:
"What am I doing to say?"
The obstacle is always:
"What will they think about what I say?"
You are a mammal first, "YourName" second.
The opinion of other mammals cuts through to your deepest need to survive.
Criticism is a near death experience for some people. Because they are mammals.
We fear what the others think, because we fear being rejected. And only a few seconds ago, on the clock of evolution, that rejection equalled death.
As FM so often pointed out: we mostly do not live consciously, we live as animals of evolved, habitual behaviour. Instincts. Today, we live in an elaborate deception - also pointed out by FM and Buddha and a 1,000+ other spiritual teachers - that we are in charge of our Self.
We are not in charge. We are mostly done by instincts.
You think you do things deliberately and consciously, when more often than not, you are running one of the many sub-routines that are common to all human mammals. Patting the back of a friend is a species-level behaviour, not special to you.
Which is why there is a universal, knee-jerk response - to my modest suggestion - that you write a message every day about what you do. 1 hour max. What's the problem?
It strikes terror in the heart of the mammal.
Get over it.
