Deep Down, Humans Haven't Been Modern Very Long

Nov 15, 2017

It's a line from Lee Child's latest bestseller - reading books like that nourishes my reptilian Self, without violence towards others.

It's a theme I keep returning to.

It's a theme that FM was on about a lot. Our evolutionary progress. Or lack of.

The laggard aspects of our evolution are no match for modern times. Disaster is all around us - like a bunch of 5-year-olds in a lolly store without supervision.

And yet, we can harness our ailing physic structure to our advantage through intelligent acceptance of its inherent limitations. Child again:

"[Reacher] felt stress building inside him, he felt an automatic response, some kind of primitive biological behaviour, that converted it to focus and strength and aggression."

Our modern chemical experiences match the fantasy life of Jack Reacher, which may account for the fact that a Child book is sold every 9 seconds. Humans grasping for a simpler past, where eating, surviving and procreating were our principal occupations.

A past well and truly gone now - a history that has morphed into an unrecognisable landscape of roads, iron birds and wires.

I am a peculiar kind of wreck. You are too. I read Jack Reacher novels, then watch Byron Katie videos on YouTube to open my heart again through tears. I teach others how to love so that I can manage my own dysfunctional infatuation.

And you are the same, yet entirely different. How is that possible?

A face is a face - yet no two are the same.

And that's the pons asinorum of your personal evolution - there are no omnilateral solutions. Every student is the same in their needs, and unique in the required remedy.

Under this there must exist something universal - a compass to show how this forest obeys the rules of north, south, east and west.

And it does exist. It comes to us from unknown sources - perhaps stretching back thousands of years, to a time when the Sumerians were first devising the sexagesimal numerical system that gave us 24 hour days, a 12-month calendar and 360 degrees.

I don't know. No-one does. It just appeared.

The common name is the Enneagram, and yet I think of it as a Discovery Compass. A tool that guides you towards the unique solutions you need against the sameness of the evolutionary task.

I used it - and still do - as the Compass for my life.

There is a universal structure that underlies all change, growth and development. And that's the thread that binds my story together. The Compass.
