Disturbing Things a Bully Did to my Daughter

When my daughter was 7, there was a bully in her class.

People rarely hug in Japan. Instead they bow: the bully leveraged that cultural tick.

Her technique was to start embracing you - a rather shocking gesture in the non-demonstrative culture of Japan. She'd throw her arms around you, and in a mist of spurious love, start bossing you about.

It then continued like this, for a long time. Relentless.

Most little girls were overwhelmed. Didn't know how to react. Became compliant to the Bully's wishes. Not Angelia.

First time the bully tried to hug her, Angelica responded:

"Go away. I don't want to hug a pig face like you."

And pushed her off.

No-one messes with Angelica, no one. I call her my Samurai.

Being honest is a challenge – speaking your mind always risks rejection, which is why we have an inbuilt reluctance to be direct and honest.

However, it works in email. It operates in a niche where you call out the elephant in the room. There will be people who appreciate that, AND there will be individuals who put you down, dismiss your ideas, even get personal about it.

"What would an idiot like you know about THAT anyway?!"

This sort of thing. It takes guts to be honest, and yet – it pays. It pays emotionally, it pays empathetically, and it pays commercially.

Of course, you need to be appropriate. You don't want to be the shrill-drill that distorts the orchestral magic. Rather you're the big, loud drum waking people up to the music.

How can you manage that?
