Disturbing Things That Nobody Knows

Sep 22, 2017

Alexander's discovery is like a smartphone.

You didn't know you needed it, but once you got it, you wondered how you ever managed without it?

In the case of Alexander's discovery - you discover disturbing things that you didn't know you didn't know. Here's an example you can explore on your own now, or in a workshop with others…

Ask everyone what they think the objective of "good posture" is?

The will say things like "Being upright; healthier spine; more alert; better for you." Write them up. Commit to an opinion.

BELIEF: upright posture is a good thing.

Then ask this question:

"Do you think it is a good idea to put more tension in your body?"

Most people react with horror:

no, No, NO!!! - they will say - that is NOT a good thing.

BELIEF: putting more tension in your body is a bad thing to do.

OK - now your trap is set.

(BTW - there is often ONE person who thinks tension is better. Thank them for their opinion, and let them know you have an exercise especially for them later.)

***

OK. Now…

Ask them to show you "good upright posture" while sitting in their chair.

Most people will roll the pelvis around the hip joint, curving the lower back into increased lordosis, and often lift their rib cages up.

Run them through this cycle: sit up - slump down - sit up - slump down - sit up.

Then ask them: when you sit upright, do you put more tension in your body?

They will discover - THEY DO.

Then ask them - but didn't you say that was a bad thing to do?

You can't lose tension by making tension; it's disturbing to think otherwise.

How do you resolve that?

Of course, that's what you'll find in ThinkingBody Online Module One.
