Driving For Uber and Back

Danish drives a Toyota Camry for Uber in Melbourne.

He's been doing it for 4 months, trying to make ends meet. A foreign student in Australia, all his saved money goes to tuition, making it hard to find money for food, rent and living. So he drives for Uber, the disruptive alternative to taxis, that is blossoming in international cities across the globe.

However, after a couple of months of sitting in his Camry, Danish has an aching back.

He's tried everything. The hospital, physio, massage, exercise. Nothing works.

We are chatting as he drives us to the airport.

"What can I do about my back?!" he exclaimed to me.

How could I resist?

10 minutes later, Danish said something that got me to sit right up in my soft sofa seat, and be glad I do what I do …

"You're the first person who gives me hope!" he exclaimed.

I asked him what he meant.

He explained that everything he did not stop his symptoms. He got relief, then soon his symptoms came back. No-one gave him any hope. When he asked what he should do, he was told the problem was his job.

"We must find other work to do" - he was told - "because your job is dangerous to your health."

"What other job can I get?" - he cried - "There are no other jobs for me!!!"

Now he was amazed to discover that he could change how he sat in his car. Hope.

And so on that early morning ride - tired and drained as I was feeling - I found my Self inspired all over again for the profession I advocate.
