EDaily–200122-Polish Language Shoulder Soup

Dec 31, 2019

Regular readers of my Posture Daily know that Chancer has an aversion to the concept of "shoulder."

Yes, there is a structure of bones and joints that correspond to the area we call "shoulder", but it is all arm.

Say "shoulder" though, and it seems like a dirty little pixie sneaks into people's minds and hypnotizes away their common sense.

After the little pixie visits, humans start believing that they can move their "shoulder" separately from their arm.

Which is complete and utter nonsense.

And a source of pain and discomfort – so many dancers suffer from this!

Because these poor dancers are being instructed by a pixie-hypnotized teacher, who is bellowing the instruction:

"Keep your shoulders down!" as the dancer is raising her arms!

Could you leave your hand down as you raise your arm?

No. Because a hand is one part of an entire arm. Obvious.

Trying to leave your shoulder down is as ridiculous as that.

But this sneaky little pixie has convinced half the world it is OK!

Here's today news blast from Chancer:

Your shoulder is your arm – and your arm is your shoulder.

While the Japanese and English-speaking languages are the same, I got this note from Posture Daily reader and Alexscovery teacher Marek Postola in Poland:

***

Inspired by your recent series of emails related to BodyThinking, I have come back to the series which I signed up to a while ago.

Watching the video where you talk about the abduction and depression of your scapulas, I noticed that you were using the word "arms" in place of where most people would say "shoulders". That, of course, is in line with your anatomical teaching. For me, the elephant in the room was the use of these words in the Polish language. We actually use the word shoulder (bark) and arm (ramię) as synonyms. In Polish you would say "Put your hands on your shoulders" or "Put your hands on your arms", and it would mean the same thing. This is something that I've been finding confusing since I was a child.

***

And there you have it.

The little pixie has been doing his dirty work in Poland too, but not as successfully as in Japan.

BodyThinking is full of these language insights.

BodyThinking takes functional anatomy and moves it to the next level – how our thinking about our moving structure influences how we move.

This is a vast area, where an Alexscovery teacher needs to carefully choose the words they use to communicate with their student.

And you need this kind of precision when communicating to your niche – if you even have one?

You use it whether you are emailing them as an invite to a workshop or lesson, or teaching them in a class.

In Chancer's world, marketing and teacher merge into markeaching.

To gain students successfully means honing your skill as a communicator – there is no other way. Words – either written or spoken in a video – is the way everyone first hears about Alexander's Discovery, and it is the way to convinces them to come to you.

The ATSuccess Foundations course blurs the lines between improving marketing and improving teaching – both feed each other.

The trouble is, most people think "marketing" and building a business is somehow not related to constructive, conscious guidance of the Self.

Chancer is here to let you know that building a business is a perfect way to evolve your understanding of the work.

My Foundations course is now open again – after a two-year hiatus. You can read more and book in anytime. More information about it is here:
