Families Need Courage, So Does Your Practice
Jan 22, 2020I've just returned from Australia, celebrating my sister's 70th birthday.
Her eldest son lives in New York, working for the United Nations; while her second son is in the Prime Minister's department in Canberra. Like good sons, they organized the festivity and travelled to Sydney. So did many other members of the family: from Gold Coast, Tasmania and Gosford. In all, 20 of us with ages ranging from 3 months to 70 years – yes, Deb was the oldest there.
We have a strong Irish background – from afar you see a crowd of smiling people yelling to each other and having a good time. You don't see immediately see the undercurrents, the strain and pain of the past, bubbling below the surface.
People who don't talk to each other.
People who pretend, but really want to go home.
Family is bumpy emotionally, never easy. Righteousness often rules – where one member feels they have been ignored, offended or otherwise poorly treated by another — there were cases of that all around both the tables we sat at.
Quite a few in fact, and some repaired just before the day!
What was curious to me is how the act of celebration can lead to reconciliation. Joy trumps pain. Celebration overcomes resentment. This was a place to think about what we mean to each other.
Sometimes your life needs a reminder from the outside to grow.
Your Alexander practice is the same. You go on with the same complaints and worries, accepting this as you do the strains in your family until one day it becomes too much.
Or until one day something happens, that reminds you to act.
It can be accidental, or it can be designed.
Designing an intervention means creating an event. With the family, there are many of these culturally, but with your Alexander practice, there are none.
Unless you manufacture it.
You do that by doing something that stimulates you to think and behave in new ways.
And that's what signing up to ATSuccess Foundations can do for you possum.
ATSuccess Foundations course was the inspiration behind the worlds largest online Alexander school; it led to new training schools and practices and new business ideas. There are hundreds of teachers who have studied with me in one way or another.
After a two year hiatus, the Foundations course – and my coaching – are available again.
No special deals sorry.
But if you're in a currency-challenged country, let me know.
