FM Throws it all Away

If you had been a seagull in 1904 - flying over a Cunard ocean liner - you would have seen a young-looking man recklessly throwing a sheaf of papers off the deck.

The young man was FM Alexander. He was 35 years old.

The papers had been the first draft of a book he had been writing while travelling from Australia, his country of birth. A considerable gambling bet on a long-shot horse had given him the capital to arrive into the heart of the Empire upon which the sun never set.

Tucked in his pocket was a letter of introduction to a Harley Street specialist; which led him to finally to Dr Spicer of Guy’s Hospital. Spicer would help FM catapult his work into becoming a "cause célèbre" of the arts and intelligentsia of his era. "Going to FM" would soon become fashionable, and FM charged a ridiculous amount for his lessons. 

No doubt that was some of the appeal.

And the next time FM would write would be to protect what he had discovered.

As the fame and efficacy of his work spread, others tried to jump on the bandwagon and cash in. FM needed to lay out his ideas to lay claim as the founder and originator of a unique body of work. And so – in stops and starts – his first full published work "Man's Supreme Inheritance" began to emerge from his mind.

This is a work full of passion and a plethora of ideas. FM followed it with a 2nd more sober book, trying to put some systematic order into a jumble of ideas and insights.

Then finally he produced his "pièce de résistance" – a much shorter book "The Use of the Self."

This precise book contains all the important and ground-breaking ideas that have sustained FM's work for over a century. It is full of startling ideas and illustrative examples.
