Forget YouTubers - Posture is Your Ultimate Influencer
Aug 13, 2020There’s a lot of fuss and baloo about how YouTubers influence people’s thinking in negative ways – spreading conspiracy theories and distorting people’s minds from reality.
Well, Posture does way more than that. Be scared. Be very scared.
Posture influences not only your state of mind, but your health as well. How you breathe, digest and circulate blood are all influenced by your Posture. It’s almost scary how many things can benefit when Posture is recognised as an Influencer.
Alexander’s Discovery is remarkably suited to solving a wide array of problems – because it is the ultimate Posture method available today. Teachers of Alexander take 4 to 7 years to skill up - a lot of time is taken with improving your own Postural condition.
In Alexander ethics – you can not help another person until you have helped your Self. However, once you’ve skill up, there is almost no limit to your influence on others through the medium Posture.
Here’s an example of a lesson – which you might think is more suited to a psychotherapist than an Alexscovery (aka Alexander Technique) teacher. Perhaps you understand why teachers take so long to train…
My student stated:
“I don’t like elevators. I get scared, almost claustrophobic – so I usually avoid them. But I just got a job on the 34th floor, and I don’t think I can climb the stairs every day. What do I do?”
I genuinely asked:
“Do you want a lesson about walking up stairs or travelling in elevators?”
General laughter, and a serious moment, then the student smiled and answered:
“The elevator.”
We set it up. Alexander is not about psychological analysis; it is about real-time analysis. These are the questions we answered together:
“What do you do as you are waiting for the elevator?”
She enacted it - it was not posturally pretty. She tightened through head and spine, and almost stopped breathing.
“What are you thinking about now” I asked her.
“The elevator.”
“Are you in the elevator now?”
“No.”
“Where are you now?”
“I am outside the elevator, waiting for it to come.”
At this point, I use my hands to help her move out of the unnecessary stressful pressure she was making by pushing her head down into her spine.
“How does that feel?” I asked.
“Much better.”
“So move your head and whole spine and tell yourself that you are here, waiting for the elevator.
And so the lesson progressed – a constant dance between the physical tension and the negative thought. As you progress in studying Alexander’s Discovery, you come to see how closely negative thinking aligns with dysfunctional Posture.
And you learn how to counteract negative thinking by a positive-feeling flow of ease that comes through the touch of your teacher’s hands and insight.
An Alexander teacher is a great career – a new kind of highly trained teacher with an ability to influence a wide range of problems that relate to both mental and physical conditions.
