Friday's 5 Fotivators of Happiness*

Yesterday was a Friday family tradition to eat breakfast at the Mullumbimby farmers' market.

Mullumbimby - as my regular readers know - is the counter cultural capital of Australia; a place where a lot of the residents don't realize the 60s are over. Bare feet and flairs are as common as nose rings and heavy rock.

Well, it's still playing live in Mullumbimby.

The farmers' market is a sight to be seen. I watched with a huge grin on my face as I contemplated the differences of living in a uni-culture (Japan) to a multi-culture (Australia). What are the advantages and disadvantages?

For me the advantage is simple: here I am with family and lifelong friendships. Having just spent an extended 3 months in Japan, I recognise that family and friendships are necessary fuel for creativity, safety and feeling loved.

Family is behind almost everything I do.

How do family and friendships rate as motivators of your happiness?

The remaining trifecta - which Japan trumps and claims the prize - are fitness, finances and faith. I definitely get fitter in Japan than I do here. I make no Mullumbimby money - zilch! And my Buddhist practise definitely deteriorates as I play act a single dad managing two demanding teenagers.

How do fitness, finances and faith rate as motivators of your happiness?
