Have You Ever Wanted to Write a Book?
Sep 22, 2019Have you tried to write a book?
If you have – and failed – I am going to let you in on a secret.
To understand the secret, let's go back a century to the early 1900s.
At that time, a young-looking man of around 35 was scratching his head while trying to write his 2nd book (having failed with the first). The man was FM Alexander, and the reason he wanted a book this time was to protect his ideas intellectually.
A century later, these books are still being studied – at BodyChance we have a several online courses devoted to it.
FM was successful with the first book. From that book a fierce argument has raged amongst his followers about its readability. Some sentences are linking together five or more ideas to craft an entire concept. As Francis Bacon once put it:
---
Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested: that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read, but not curiously, and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.
---
Alexander's books can only be digested.
And yet FM's aphorisms – pith little things he declared while teaching a student – are easy enough to taste…
--
If I breathe as I understand breathing, I am doing something wrong.
--
What?!
Easy enough to taste – but can you digest it?
This clear statement is like a Zen koan: it takes an in-depth study to extract the true meaning. That statement challenges anyone who has an interest in breathing. Just like a koan, it challenges your ordinary idea.
It might be simple – but it also appears as illogical, radical and almost incomprehensible.
And yet this simple statement comes from the man who first gained fame in Australia as "the breathing man". Long before there was any talk of Alexander's discovery or Alexander Technique, here was a man with a reputation of being able to sort out almost any breathing difficulty presented to him.
And that's the little secret: words spoken while teaching others are usually timeless gems; whereas the ability to be precise can be lost. A quick book can be recorded, a deep book must be written.
And if you are a person who seeks answers, explanations and ways to explore Alexander's Discovery – the best method is to study his books.
Of course, most teachers – and trainees – think that it is to hard. The books seem incomprehensible.
Which is why I spent a year breaking the most important chapter in FM's third book ‘Use of the Self’ in an Online course called BodyThinking. This is a resource for any teacher serious about lifting their teaching game.
