Helping People is Not Always Your Best Plan
May 01, 2018Yesterday I wrote about crafting an introduction much the same as you might write a film script. Every moment planned and delivered with a clear intention of psychological impact.
Hollywood has been doing it for years.
Here's an example:
How many times has a new student asked you…
"How can I do this for myself?"
In the past, I tried to answer that question. Like a good boy scout, I would repeat each step, watch their eyes, and expand when I saw confusion.
Chancer is no longer a good boy scout.
Because?
I want them to come back.
I don't want them to believe - THEN - that all they need is a few tips from me, a pat-on-the-back, and be-on-your-merry-way.
Wait. You mean, Chancer WON'T help them?
YES, you bet!
Isn't that terrible?
No, helping them THEN is dumb.
More than dumb - it's inconsiderate.
They have no idea the glories that await them by implementing Alexander's discovery into their lives. Almost none. I serve them by encouraging them to continue - this is markeaching at its grandest. Understanding that time is incorporated into your teaching.
I help them by NOT helping them at that moment.
Instead, I say something that pretty well guarantees they finally realize:
- this is an education;
- this is a process;
- this takes time;
- YOU NEED ME.
I've been telling my students this all along; only they never heard it.
Now - FINALLY - comes the sweet psychological moment I've been prepping for has arrived. It will only come around once, and I am ready to pounce. By delivering this way - my teaching drops deep down into their unconscious self and starts working its hidden magic on their intentions and decisions.
And it must be delivered precisely. I've experimented with many different responses, and finally found one that works. The reaction is almost always the same…
Surprise. Shock. Recognition. A smile. A nod. An understanding. Then a kind of knowing look of respect - THEY CAVED. They're mine now.
It's a marvel to watch, and it happens almost every time.
What does Chancer say?
Aha, not everything is free.
This riposte - and many others like it - form part of the plan to give a corporate presentation that pretty guarantees they want you back.
All part of Chancers "Getting Alexander Work with Businesses" course which starts in 4 days.
