Here's A Stupid Concept: The Lower Jaw
Jul 19, 2019You'd think that dentists would understand anatomical truth around the jaw, teeth and throat right?
Well, you'd be wrong.
Postural behaviour is not the same as clinical expertise.
Which is not to question their ability to sort out derelict teeth – of that I am forever impressed and grateful. But when it comes to talking about the behaviour of moving parts, don't be surprised to hear something silly like this:
"I am concerned about your lower jaw."
Your lower jaw? Huh?
You only have one jaw; it's called the mandible.
This is not my opinion; this is an anatomical fact.
The "upper jaw" is a fairytale.
There is no upper jaw – that is the bottom of your head!
But when you think of an upper jaw, you start moving it as though it was somehow not part of your whole head. Crazy. But it happens all the time. Instead of moving the mandible (jaw) in the way Nature designed it, you start imagining that your jaw is like a beak, with the upper and lower parts moving away from each other simultaneously as you open your mouth.
If you behave that way, you are moving the entire 5 kilogram mass of your head back through space to a new point. What do you think happens to your balance when you do that?
Practically - you don't' notice, because the elegance of your postural design is that it will instantly compensate for silly fairytales.
At a price.
The price is the efficiency of balance.
The price is undue downward pressure on your breathing mechanism.
The price is increased muscular activity in your legs – if you are standing – so you don't immediately fall back on the floor because of your "upper jaw" movements.
This tiny misconception can lead you into years of misery.
That's why a visit to BodyChance is an excellent item to put on your bucket list of "Things I must do before I die." It covers the "I must visit Japan" bucket list item too. May is a picturesque time – if you come a week before the residential, you'll catch the cherry blossoms. And the weather then is delicious.
I've put three rooms aside for foreign visitors – twin rooms, so bring a mate!
