Hidden Habits That Dictate Your Life

Mar 05, 2017

People come to us in pain, full of theories why.

Most of them wrong.

As purveyors of Alexander's discovery, we know the hidden habit that dictates the pain students are experiencing.

And the reason is shocking in its simplicity.

You are co-ordinating your actions by increasing your downward moving contractions of head/spine and arms – reverse that, all will be better.

People look at us like we are mad. What are you talking about?

And yet, in the teaching room with a student, we are Kings and Queens: dishing out a fundamental truth of nature, of which science remains largely ignorant. And forget about mainstream public. Pilates is better known than us.

Why – as a Profession – are we so feeble at attracting attention?

We are queens and kings no more.

Success in this area feels complicated – because the reason for THIS pain of failure is not clear to us. We can empathise with our students as we are now just as puzzled about what causes our own pain.

There is something mysterious, ironic and intriguing about that, don’t you think?

Finding success feels complicated. Just as students feel about ridding their lives of chronic pain, so our failure lingers about like a bad smell on hot day.

But is it complicated?

Could there be a simple reason – just as Alexander discovered – lurking in our ignorant darkness? Something so obvious that, just like the head/spine relationship, it is hiding in plain sight?

An answer could be lurking in your dreams, because that’s where I found mine…

Recently I started writing every day (sign up here) to people interested in expanding the reach of Alexander's discovery in the world. Dedicated, passionate teachers who wonder why they still struggle to sell food to the starving.

I was one of them, so on September 26th, 2013 I finally decided that I had to communicate. I had to find my voice: to articulate; to let the world know what I was thinking; to declare why I believed I could support them in doing what they wanted to do.

And then my recurring dream started: I lose all my clothes.

It’s weird. I feel strange – OBVIOUSLY – slightly embarrassed, wondering why people aren’t shocked by my nakedness. Then I start an argument with myself – in the dream ! – about what’s wrong with me being naked?

“How you got something to hide?” (yes) (no)

“Are you ashamed?” (yes) (no)

But why? Of what?

Are you worth loving? (yes) (no)

And so it goes on – an argument that lives inside my hidden core of resistance to success…

Because successful people are noticed: they become objects of projection by others.

At the 7th Congress at Oxford in 2004, I was chatting with a trainee in the lobby of the hall. He was coming to Japan, so had come to introduce himself. As part of his introduction, he told me that multiple teachers had warned him to “keep away from Jeremy Chance”…

I could fill a book with stories like these.

In ATSuccess we say – the sign of success is that you are publically criticized.

Until that happens, no one is moved by your presence.

You’re just vanilla ice-cream. Boring. Who even cares? And that feels safer.

This is your hidden habit. To run away from that scrutiny: to be afraid of being shunned, defeated, shamed, laughed at, criticised, hated. It’s natural to resist that stuff – most mammals don’t survive well on their own.

That’s reptilian. Not us.

We crave approval, almost like a drug. And like drug addicts, we are at the mercy of our addiction. When you seek to validate your existence through the assent of others – rather than by love towards your Self - you abrogate the crown.

Self-hate reigns supreme. The Queen is dead.

To succeed, you must go through this epiphany.

You discover the hidden obstacle to being a Communicator. An effective Communicator. It isn’t because you can’t write. It isn’t because you have nothing to say. It isn’t because you are too busy. It isn’t because you are too poor.

Those are the surface habits that distract you from the hidden truth.

It’s that you don’t love you. You don’t believe in your Self. You don’t think you “have it” whatever “it” is in your world of defeat and failure.

Shame drives failure, and it has been hiding in plain sight all along.

One ATSuccess Pro member is joyfully working through this process, recognizing that when this is done, success will happen. She recognizes that it is OK she misses targets, or neglects her technical duties…

Until THIS is undone, all else appears complicated. After, all appears simple.

Whatever you believe we do on the 60Day Foundations course, I am pretty confident its nothing like that. The 60Day is a journey into you, a second AT training and, just like the first, aims for you to get closer to the truth of you.

Because success lives in the core of you, no-where else.

For the next week only, ATSuccess Director Peter Jacobson is offering a free consultation about your situation – no selling pressure, just good information. Take advantage, you’d be crazy to miss out on this. Email him now.
