How the Rich & Famous Hide No Within Yes

Dean Martin - 'the king of cool' - had seen out his initial golden years.

He was approaching 50. His phenomenally successful partnership with Jerry Lewis had finished in 1956. Now it was 1965, his film career was picking up, things looked bright…

Then an offer came from NBC - do a TV show with us.

NO

…was Dean's response, but his agent urged him to embed his no within a yes. Instead of saying no, his agent proclaimed, just ask for a ridiculous amount of money, and anything else you want.

So Dean did.

And NBC said yes.

Dean was flabbergasted, but smart enough to know that if they were THAT keen, maybe this TV thingy was worth looking at again. And so "The Dean Martin Show" was born, and ran for 264 episodes until 1974.

Every good yes-plan has no imbedded within it.

A bare-bones no is confusing for our brains, because we are action orientated. We do, we don't "not do." When you spend too much time saying 'no' all the time, you can end up frozen and stiff.

As Marj put it once:

"How can you move your Self when you have so many 'nots' inside?"

It takes more skill to develop a yes-plan, than it does to just say no. Saying "no" is easy, and it leads to few possibilities. Saying yes requires a creative view of a brighter future. Dean made up his perfect life, and asked for that. They said yes.

The trick - in Alexander terms - is to honour your "no" by embedding it within your yes plan. Again as Marj put it:

"If you are asking your head to move forward and up, haven't you already inhibited it from going back and down?"

No embedded within yes.

Giving people a vision of yes is an important aspect of markeaching in ATSuccess.
