How to Create a Happy Past
Mar 21, 2020“I’m beginning to believe that, in films, what everyone is striving for is to produce moments – not a performance, not a characterization, not something where you get into the part – you produce moments that create a feeling of believability to what you’re doing….”
Actor Jimmy Stewart, 1972 Interview

Why would you want a past full of unhappy moments?
Teachers, coaches, instructors – people in meetings, family communication or a spat with your lover – all of these will go better if your other side remembers some wonderful moments.
And you MUST underline, celebrate, highlight and amplify these moments.
Why?
For example…
Last week in Osaka, I worked with a ballet dancer on her turns.
And I made a terrible, terrible mistake.
Which I only noticed as the lesson dragged on and on. I will write at length about her lesson tomorrow, but today I want to focus on the headline:
JEREMY MUCKS UP A LESSON
What did I do?
I forgot to celebrate success.
After struggling for a long time – my ballet dancer finally incorporated all my input into her system and executed a near-perfect turn.
THEN would have been an excellent time to send the lesson.
Why?
Because she leaves the lesson with a flavour of success.
She has the memory that she can, that a right turn is possible.
That is a happy past.
Instead, what did we do?
We continued, and continued, and continued and never made the same height again. The memory was of failure, not success.
During this current c19 meltdown, cherish your good moments.
Create a happy past: highlight, celebrate and amplify them.
If you do that, your motivation increases. You come out of hiding in your shell and creativity starts shining from your eyes.
Motivation is at the core of any great lesson – in anything, particularly Alexander's Discovery, but also how you navigate these extraordinary times.
I will continue reaching out to y’all, and I still have the offer for you to jump into BodyThinking Course – yes, all 66 videos – and sessions with me when things get back to normal. You can do your three coaching sessions at any time up to a year.
When you need them most – I am online once a month right now. Sorry it’s not more, but I have a day job in Japan.
It makes more sense to do something constructive like this – rather than obsessing out on c19 news – especially when you have the time actually to watch them.
