How to Eat Alexander
Oct 26, 2019Many, many years ago - as I was wondering how to save my crashing Alexander school and support my young family - I realized I needed to offer my students bite-sized bits of Alexander’s discovery.
My course - as I offered it then – was a huge mouthful.
I demanded a massive chunk of your time & commitment: 4 years of classes, every year, 30 weekends and 60 evenings, a residential away. No flexibility, no choice.
Take it or leave it.
Students didn’t take it, and more than often, they left it.
That’s when I started to ask the question: how can I divvy up an Alexscovery training into little snacks?
It was a question that consumed me for years. I commissioned a study of learning systems currently in vogue in Japan; I played around with creating a system of coloured belts a la martial arts; I invented different ‘learning objectives’ that students had to attain. I even flew to Hawaii for a retreat to plan the course!
Round and around I went – wondering how to divide the indivisible?
When my solution finally arrived, I wondered why it had taken me so long.
Universities have been doing it for years – the Arts and the Sciences. Simple. That’s when I came up with the idea of two x 2-year certificate courses. One about the sciences underlying Alexander’s Discovery, the other about the human applications of FM’s work.
Two courses, one subject.
But what to name them?
I wanted a name that did two things:
1. logically distinguish each course…
(while simultaneously)
2. merging them together!
Sitting on a train with Cathy Madden – asking these questions – two names appeared:
BodyThinking – for the Sciences
ThinkingBody – for the Humanities
Later I added a third course – Teaching Methods – and voila!
I now had a three-course meal.
As I planned, announced and rolled out each course, my school gradually grew from 30 trainees to 130 trainees. No-one was getting indigestion anymore, and Alexander’s work started flourishing in Japan.
One of the delightful aspects of this naming system is how easy it is to confuse them. Which is perfect, I thought – because you cannot separate the knowledge in practice.
I continue to confuse them to this very day.
Why, only yesterday I sent y’all an email “Creative Posture” about my current special offer for ThinkingBody, and advertised it as BodyThinking instead!
I couldn’t believe I had done that, and yet I was perversely proud that I had.
ThinkingBody took me 30 years to develop, and it includes a unique learning tool that I based upon the Enneagram but developed myself. I call it the Compass – it offers you a transformational teaching model based purely on the work of the old man. There’s more of a write-up about it at the link below.
The value of ThinkingBody is to evolve your ability to use FM’s process for deep, life-long issues in a transformational way. Students today include their emotional life in lessons, and Alexscovery teachers need the means to manage that, as do the students too.
You can find this in ThinkingBody Online.
And for those who purchase, I have a little surprise in store for early November. It will give your purchase decision even more value, but only for those on the other side.
The offer closes soon, and it’s available at 40% off. After you click Purchase, enter the Coupon Code below to get your discount. It will stop working soon, so don’t miss out:
