How To Teach Groups
Apr 02, 2017It amazes me that anyone finds teaching groups difficult.
And I get it. I worried once too. So what's difficult about standing in front of a group of people?
TWO THINGS:
- The trash in your head
- Not knowing what to do
---
1. THE TRASH IN YOUR HEAD
It's not what is happening in the room that makes it "difficult" - it is what is happening in your head. You look at them all and think: "What do they think of me?" And because you can't possible know that - (can you read minds???) - then you make it up:
- They don't like me
- They are bored with me
- They want me to finish
All a fairy tale.
And next thing you know: you're anxious, depressed and overwhelmed by it all.
My last two emails - The Anatomy of Terror and Overcoming Terror - talked about how to handle trash-talk in your head. Read them at my blog.

2. NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO
That's a biggie, I'll give you that.
For teachers of Alexander's discovery, it comes down to having a replacement plan for using touch all the time. Traditional teaching - a la FM-style - involves putting your hands on the student for the duration of a lesson. (If you're used to that kind of teaching, I can see why groups would challenge you.)
Teachers of other modalities have a similar problem - what do you do with your time?
And the best,
most profitable
most welcomed AND
most effective thing to do is…
Analyse your student's movements.
Whether they sing, dance, compute, act, walk, juggle or talk - they are going to have to co-ordinate head/spine with the activity (and most people haven't got a clue how to do that.)
You can analyse the head/spine relationship - but can you analyse the activity too?
Maybe you know the activity well - can you integrate head/spinal movement into it?
Here's what you must know:
How do bones, joints - and the muscles that move them - work together to produce the activity you are observing? First, I spent 40 years studying this. Next, I spent two years and more than $50,000 building a comprehensive online learning program to show you how.
BodyThinking ONLINE.
It is mandatory for BodyChance trainees to complete (there's an exam) and now it's available for you to explore.
The first people in are going to get a special deal.
