Inhibition: Much Ado About Something

May 17, 2017

My recent dispatch declaiming the sacred sheen of Alexandrian inhibition brought forth some solid affirmations. Phew!

From Jane Buhler comes this nice summary of the original post, throwing in a declaim of another AT sacred cow…

Excellent Jeremy. Totally agree. There is virtually no human system of thought, from the Buddha's teachings, onward to contemporary psychology, taking in all the major religions and systems of ethical philosophy, that does not place what is called "inhibition" in Alexander jargon in an absolutely central position - all of which suggests that "inhibition" is pretty important to human behaviour and development. Alexander did come up with it, as with so much, but he was by no means the first to do so. He was also not the first or only one to come up with "psychophysical unity", though he certainly discovered it for himself, which was a great achievement. We need to emphasise the unique aspect of his discovery - the fact that we coordinate ourselves via our head:spine relationship, and the effect of coordinating ourselves in cooperation with that relationship via direction on all aspects of psychophysical functioning.

"It's what he used to discover what he did" - excellent point.

All the best, Jane.

To which I’d add faulty sensory appreciation, direction, power of habit. What’s left?

You know what.

ATSuccess member Cecile Raynor offers her logical biz outcome of this insight:

You crack me up Jeremy!:)

I would love to hear you write about the different ways people teach inhibition. I just heard an ACAT teacher in a video explain it by saying, it is doing something as if you were not doing it. I know what they are referring to but I always found that way of talking about it so vague that it is not helpful in any way shape or form!

That is why I decided not to even attempt to define the AT in my book, where I am acknowledging it and referring to it on a couple occasion but I am sharing my expression of it which I call the Body Intelligence Activation Process or BIA Process. It seems to speak to people way better that the Alexander Technique. And yes, I include everything I learned studying AT in my BIA Process but I expanded my expression of it like you did to make it more receivable and helpful!

Even then, it can be groundbreaking!

Best

Cecile:)

It’s what I teach every new ATSuccess member.

When you run around telling the world “I teach Alexander Technique” here’s what mostly happens:

  1. People squint their eyes, look worried and ask “Huh?!”
  2. You become a commodity – “Let’s search the cheapest teacher…”
  3. You bury your own individuality under an Edwardian morass.

And I am only just getting started.

If you want to start the process of:

  1. Having a name for your biz that actually explains the benefit; AND
  2. Sequester your own privaleged community that only wants you; AND
  3. Teach all your life lessons, not just those Edwardian exercises; THEN

Get with the ATSuccess way of making a biz based on Alexander's discovery by inventing your own brand, just as Cecile is doing.

Come on guys and gals – this is 2017, not 1894.
