Inspirations & Burdens

Jul 06, 2013

Some of you come here every day. Some catch up every few days, or every month. Others are thinking "I must look, but…" If you are reading this today – July 3rd 2013 – you are obviously part of the first group. You're here every day. Good on you. If you are in the second or third groups – good on you. What I understand about all of you is this: You are here for you, not here for me. I am not leading you, you are leading me. I turn up here because I know you will. Let me put it this way – the day no-one turns up, that's the day I stop writing. I often tell my students that the quality of my lesson is a function of their own participation. The teacher is created by the students, not the students created by the teacher. This opposes conventional thinking, yet it aligns equally well with the truth. Closer in fact. How your student's mind relates to what is said or written is where the source of your power abides. Your impact does not arise from your words. Your impact arises from how your student is listening. Let me give you and example… Just last week I had two people comment about my website: First person: "Daily inspiration" Second person: "Daily burden" Both are true – neither is right. However it shows that my words are useless in the face of your listening. The same is true of your clients. If you don't know how people are listening, you can't speak in a way that will be heard. How do your students respond to you? They feel your hands touching, then they think "Wow, (s)he has powerful hands. I love getting this experience." Is that accurate? There's an alternative representation of what is happening: the "powerful hands" they feel are not "powerful hands," it is their powerful Self they experience. Haven't you noticed, as a teacher, how some people are more responsive than others? "Responsive" is the key word here. Whatever a person feels when they have a lesson with you, this a function of how "responsive" they are, not how "powerful" your hands are. Start believing the latter, you assume an identity of "manipulator". Continue with the former, you preserve the interdependent self-responsibility that gives air to transformation. It has actually taken me years to fully grasp this point, even now I still have niggling doubts. Thoughts like: "But Marj was definitely different from my other teachers – how can you discount that?" I don't, and I agree it is true. But Marj's skill was not "powerful hands," her skill is in how she invited me to know me. She knew how I was listening… So I invite you to listen in a way that inspires you, not burdens you. What you get out of my blog, the videos, texts, 12 Point Plans, audio tapes, Skype calls  and worksheets is entirely dependent upon you. And that's wonderful to know. Everyone can be your teacher, if you listen for it…
