Is the CORVID-19 virus freaking you out?
Feb 26, 2020I've been reading Daniel Kahneman – a psychologist who won the Nobel prize for his insights - and I came across his observation about how our brain works in times like this:
"The Altar tale illustrates a basic limitation in the ability of our mind to deal with small risks: we either ignore them altogether or give them far too much weight - nothing in between."
He then goes on to highlight a situation that many parents are familiar with – their child is late coming home. Some parents will quickly generate horrific images in their minds - even though the likelihood of a real disaster is significantly small.
As Kahneman points out – our brains don't do small.
Although the outbreak of COVID-19 is serious, the risk to you personally is currently still small.
Did you survive SARS?
Did you survive Ebola?
Did you survive HIV?
Will you survive COVID-19?
Of course, COVID-19 will be disruptive – it already is – and that is different from life-threatening. You may lose some income; you may get behind in your work; you may even get the virus. If you do, it's almost certain you will survive. Unless you are already sick, or quite old, the authorities say that - with proper care - you will be well again within 3 to 6 weeks.
Officially, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced a current mortality rate between 1~3%. i.e. 1 to 3 people out of every 100 dies.
However, our brains don't do small.
We read more, worry more, start making decisions that are disproportionate to the risk. Instead of following that path – embrace what may become necessary and then ask your Self if you will be OK?
Here we go...
When/If COVID-19 is declared a Pandemic by WHO – which seems likely – these are some appropriate behaviours:
- stock up on any medicines you need
- stay at home as much as possible
- stay away from large events
- stop touching your face
- wash your hands a lot
- stock up with food
At the risk of offending some people, you could see this as an unexpected holiday at home. Is that so bad?
My message is simple – remember that your fear is being manufactured by a brain that quickly gets out of control, and cannot distinguish between small risk and significant risk.
On the other hand – be conscious and constructive.
Do those things that will keep you, and other members of your community, safe.
Alexander's Discovery is about how to use Constructive Conscious Guidance to manage your Posture, and for Chancer, your Posture is synonymous with your behaviour.
How you move in this COVID-19 infected world is your Posture.
Move calmly, consciously and be awake to doing what is appropriate. And if you feel in need of some Chancer support, join my program!
