Is Your Head like My Head?

When you say ‘head’, you say it as though you think you know it.

You don’t know it. 

In fact, you never can know it.

You only know what you imagine a ‘head’ to be. 

And in that you are unique. 

Noone else has your conception of ‘head’, because no-one else has your mind.

Mind is at the centre of Posture – not bones, joints and muscles.

And mind is fluid, imaginative and, unfortunately, often arrogant.

Mind believes it’s idea of ‘head’ is the right idea, the only idea, the world standard. Although no-one is crazy enough to think that every physical head is identical, when it comes to the mental conception of ‘head’ – we throw out the idea of uniqueness and believe everyone has the same mental conception as we do.

People listen while believing they know what the instructor means when she says:

“Move your head this way.”

“Move your arms that way.”

“Do this with your legs.”

Everyone watching on YouTube thinks they understand.

A well-trained Alexscovery (aka Alexander Technique) teacher knows that your idea is special - it is unique. Therefore, for postural training to be successful, you must first understand and agree on some elementary things… 

It’s like maths – when you understand and agree that in Base 10: 2 + 5 = 7 - you can start having successful mathematical communications.

In Posture, the 2 + 5 is: 2 (head & spine) + 5 (2 arms, 2 legs and a jaw) and you need to understand and agree on this.
