Let Someone Else Do the Laundry!

Lists.

Not the kind of lists that say:

Do the dirty laundry

Greet the handsome new neighbour

Feed the dog

Not those lists. Another kind. Ones that make money. Ones that make it possible for someone else to do your dirty laundry. And feed the dog.

Back in 1980 - when there was no internet, texting or even faxes - your list consisted of names and addresses. At SATA in Sydney, we would assemble red wine, students, envelopes and time, to stuff out a slew of messages to our followers.

It was the engine of the business. That, together with a weekly add for $275 with the Nation Review advertising my residentials, was how we thrived and survived. I did not know it then, but I was following the practice of any successful business: building a list of people, anyhow you can.

They phoned us, and we immediately offered to send out our brochure. Usually, they agreed, and now we had their name and address. Not just one call and never hear from them again - instead, we got their details so we could keep asking over and over and over…

And because of that, SATA grew.

Today it's a different game, but the fundamentals never change.

There are three key issues to deal with:

1. How can you find people to go on your list?

2. Once found, how do you convince them to join?

3. Once joined, how do you keep them on your list?

BodyChance - my school of 132 trainees in Japan - was also built on list-building. You have to do it that way. Why? Because you can't keep advertising into the void and expect to succeed. Not today. Today you need to pull together a community - and that grows out of a healthy, engaged list of people.
