Making Mystery and Theatre of Your Group Teaching

A new idea about Group Teaching has recently taken grip in my mind.

I spent today preparing and recording the first class for my Group Teaching Discovery Course, which starts July 10th. And I got clearer and clearer about it…

The new idea was nourished by my experiences, in trying to get Alexander's discovery as an item in corporate Japan. Failed miserably at first – wrote 3 blogs about that, starting here.

EVENTUALLY, I think BodyChance will succeed – big time – but to do that requires a transformation of the BodyChance style of teaching. Maybe even a new company.

The “BodyChance style of teaching” is Marjorie Barstow’s style of teaching activities in groups, led by the student’s wish.

No chair and table: discursive and interactive and capricious.

BodyChance is also “commercially” orientated - having the silly idea, that making money to fund further development, might be good thing for Alexander's discovery. And for that, the niche idea has been adopted, along with developing communities of learners.

However – so stunned and shocked was I, by our first forays in offering courses in Japanese businesses – that I began to think the BodyChance style of teaching, WON’T WORK THERE.

And my new idea - (drum beat) - Create Theatre !!! - (a cymbal clash!)

An Alexander discovery group designed to be live, human theatre.

By theatre I mean - it includes drama, mystery, emotion, celebration, tension, excitement. Yes, it’s possible to produce all those experiences during just one class.

How?

It takes planning to set it up – it isn’t just going to happen. Theatre is a consciously constructed environment, designed to produce experiences in an audience, which will be instructive in whatever idea the playwright wishes to express.
