Minds Loosen Muscles the Fastest
Apr 23, 2021Is online is the new group teaching?
Back in 1976 - when I had just arrived in London to start my training - I heard on the grapevine that there had been a volcanic eruption of indignation at the latest STAT meeting. Without going into all the gossip – I did that in another blog if you want to search it – Walter Carrington was in trouble because his students were doing radical things like organising weekend group retreats; and workshops on how to run!
This was the heyday of the cherished, individual lesson – before coaching, trainers and bespoke solutions became the rage.
And today, we face a similar identity crisis – can Alexander's Discovery be communicated successfully online?
When I first asked the members of the coming Symposium about the effectiveness of their teaching online, Sarah Barker just laughed. That was a no-brainer for her. Long before "online teaching" vaulted to the front by way of a pandemic, Sarah noticed that she could be more effective with older folks by using less touch, not more.
I know what she means.
In my experience, the mind loosens muscles far quicker than my hands are capable of doing. FM had the gift, but lesser mortals cannot effect changes so successfully – then what do you do?
Sarah's presentation – "Teaching with Touch" - explores her journey of many years on this question. Through collaboration with scientists, she harnassed some impressive results. As a lead teacher of young actors at her University, she had decades to explore implementing many of the ideas she gathered first from Marjorie Barstow (1899-1995) and other 'brand name' teachers.
Those who teach groups should have no trouble adapting to online teaching – although the constraints are different, and your presentation needs tweaking.
