Monkeys in Rebellion to Being Right
Jul 29, 2017At Arashiyama Park in Kyoto
there is mountain populated
by hundreds of monkeys.
You can feed them peanuts,
but the funny part is that YOU are in the cage
and THEY look at you from outside:
monkeys reach through the bars to get your nuts!
After that, you can stroll outside
and watch how they live in the forest.
I was amazed to see how they slept…
I saw one of them in a tree fast asleep
with his head twisted to rest on a high branch
with the rest of his body slumped over the branch below.
How can he sleep like that? I wondered.
I would wake up with a sore neck!
That's the thing about natural co-ordination:
it isn't about the position you are in.
Monkeys don't think about keeping a "good use",
yet we all admire how well they move.
So what is different?
Well, what if there was no "correct" use?
What is good use is about something else?
Here it is, my first radical idea for you:
There is NO "right" way and NO "wrong" way.
There is only Nature's way…
I wish Alexander teacher's really lived that creed.
But they don't, as anyone subject to the "use" police can testify.
This "right" or "wrong" is a deeply human habit.
We have this feeling that I have to get it "right"
that makes having good "anything" so hard.
Students want "better posture",
so they sit up straight, try to be good
but soon feel tired, and slump down again.
Isn't that what they experience?
Don't you think they'd get sick of that?
They do, and that's where Alexander's discovery comes in…
If offers is a third way, a different way.
I've done workshops with hundreds of people
and nearly everyone says the same:
"I can't keep up good posture.
I keep forgetting. It's too hard."
How do you deal with students like that?
How do you reframe their thinking?
How do you guide them into a different way of thinking?
These are the things I explore in ThinkingBody.
