Only A Failed Life is Successful

My life is a failure. And it continues to be - I am glad of it.

Your life is a failure too, if you have achieved anything worthwhile.

How does that work?

Scientists out there have probably got my drift. Edison puts it differently. About his experience of trying to invent the light bulb, he said:

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

Yes, maybe we haven't failed. Maybe every day we find SOMETHING that won't work, and every day - if we are smart - we learn from that.

It's tricky, and musicians suffer terribly from this misunderstanding.

One wrong note, and their night can is ruined. I wondered - is there such a thing as the 'no-mistake' performance? To answer that question, I spent a few years trying to find a musician who had never - like, NEVER - played a concert without making a wrong note, been late on a cue, or some such error.

I am still looking.

Success depends upon failure.

It depends upon getting things wrong. Just yesterday I was coaching an artist friend of mine. She was considering selling her art online. I asked her why she hadn't displayed anything yet, since it was already 2 months since we last talked.

Her answer: because, why, if, only, must, need … We've all been there.

All the tired old reasons NOT TO ACT.

So I said:

"You're doing Ready - Aim - Fire - Aim. You want to do:

Ready - FIRE - Aim"

FIRE and get it wrong. Then start aiming.

Translated it means: Do it, do something, say something - be vulnerable, unsure, prone to error.

AND GROW.

What is it you don't do now? What is it you don't say? When you a faint voice saying, "Do it. Say it. Be it," what do you do?

I am that voice today. Whatever it is - THAT THING - do it.
